Magnolia Independent Learning Center

Magnolia Independent Learning Center (MILC) offers an independent study format as an alternative to a classroom program.  Students who have not been successful or satisfied with their experience in traditional schools may find an independent study program is a better option for completing their education.  MILC combines individualized learning plans with self-awareness and leadership development.  Students are enrolled in curriculum leading to matriculation with a high school diploma, G.E.D., or re-entry at grade level in a comprehensive or alternative school program.  Enrollment in the program is voluntary.

MILC provides students with the opportunity to:
  • (a) learn at home outside the comprehensive school environment
  • (b) complete courses in CORE and elective subjects
  • (c) receive curriculum counseling
  • (d) referral counseling to community agencies as needed

MILC is conveniently located in the downtown area, next door to Shasta County Office of Education.  MILC is close to RABA transportation.

Program Highlights:

  • Open Entry-A student can enroll anytime during the school year.  No need to wait for a class or semester to start.

  • Flexible Self-paced Rate of Learning-Students set their own time and pace for learning within the boundaries of the contracted minimum standards.

  • Standards Based Learning-In core subjects, curriculum is developed and aligned to meet or exceed the standards set by the State of California.
  • Subject Matter Concentration-Enrollment in fewer courses at a time allows for greater in-depth learning and results in less confusion.  Students see results quickly.  Credits are accumulated as assignments are completed.  A maximum of three (3) courses will be offered at a time.

David Lambert

I wanted to be a teacher since I started school in 1959.  I finally realized that dream in 1991 after working as an Instructional aide for 5 years.  I have been working in Education since 1986 in various capacities.  I have worked over 11 years in the classroom and 9 years as an Administrator.  I have been an Independent Study Teachers for 3 1/2 years.

I have loved this work, but Independent Study has been my favorite assignment.  The ability to connect with students through more one-on-one or small group contact builds relationships that cannot be achieved in a larger class setting.  I believe that this makes it easier to motivate students to enjoy learning and to become "lifelong learners".

Education:
Bachelors of Science: Utah State University (1991)
Teaching Credential: Simpson University (1992)
Administrative Credential: Sacramento State University (1998)

Having come from a family of teachers, early on I believed it was a job I could enjoy, and a worthy choice for a profession.

I've been a classroom teacher since 1992, mostly in self-contained classrooms where I taught all subjects, although for eight years I taught Science and Art exclusively - which I enjoyed very much.  Now, as an independent study teacher, I have the privilege of working one-on-one with students, helping them to gain the skills they need for future success.  I want my students to know that life is a great challenge, and a high school diploma will help them meet it with greater confidence.  Education is still the best investment.

Education:

Bachelor of Science: Indiana Wesleyan University

Teaching Credential: Simpson College
