Naturalist/Cabin Counselor
Naturalist/Cabin Counselors teach primarily 5th and 6th grade students at Whiskeytown Environmental School's California Department of Education certified Resident Outdoor Science School (ROSS). The ROSS program serves approximately 130 students and up to 18 cabin counselors per week. The weekly program runs Monday morning through Friday at noon. The camp is open to students February through the first week of June.
Naturalist /Cabin Counselors also teach K-8th grade day field labs.
Naturalists are trained in facilitating a variety of instructional activities to teach WES' concepts and selected California State Science Standards. The Naturalist/Cabin Counselor is the primary person responsible for providing on-call overnight services as a cabin counselor when needed.
Qualifications:
- B.A. or B.S. required for using Whiskeytown Environmental School as an internship for graduation (preferably in natural, life, or physical science)
- Ability to develop good rapport and positive relations with students, teachers and parents
- Ability to communicate well orally and in writing
- Ability to work lengthy hours managing small and large groups of children
- Ability to respond to crisis situations in a positive, productive manner
- Standard first aid and CPR certification
Unfamiliar with the area? An extensive (150 page, 12.5 MB) handbook, "The Whiskeytown Environmental School Naturalist Guide" was created and developed by Colin Kessler, a former WES Naturalist, to assist other naturalists with the identification of fauna and flora in the Whiskeytown Basin.
