AVID is a middle school through high school program to prepare students in the middle with potential for success in rigorous secondary curriculum for four-year college eligibility.AVID is an academic, regularly-scheduled elective program based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative grouping.The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities. ^top

Q. Who is an AVID Student? A.AVID students are students in the middle capable of completing a college preparatory curricular path.AVID students enroll in rigorous academic classes and in the AVID elective class, where they receive academic support.Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.They are proud to be in the program. ^top
Q. What is the AVID curriculum? A.The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors, and emphasizes teaching pedagogy which allows college preparatory classes to be accessible to all students. ^top
Q. Who makes up the AVID faculty/Site Team? A.One key to a successful AVID program is a site coordinator/teacher. The ideal candidate should be a respected site instructional leader who works well with secondary school personnel, college students, and faculty. This person must be able to organize curriculum as well as activities, and make a strong commitment to serve the needs of target students. The coordinator works with colleagues in all subject areas to implement teaching methodologies used in AVID, and with counselors to schedule AVID students into college preparatory classes.Counselors also assist in college entry test taking preparation and in the college financial aide application process.A site team of administrator, counselor, AVID coordinator, and subject area teachers makes AVID goals a reality throughout the school year.The site team may also include AVID students, tutors, and parents. ^top
Q. Who directs the AVID program? A. The Region 2 AVID Center for (Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, and Trinity) is at the Shasta County Office of Education.
