AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elective class offered in grades six through twelve. The purpose of the AVID program is to prepare students in the middle (2.0 - 3.5 GPA) with academic potential for four-year college eligibility. Each week, students receive two hours of instruction, two hours in tutor led study groups, and one hour in motivational activities and academic survival skills, including critical reading and writing skills. AVID students are encouraged to take prep courses (in middle school) and move into honors/advanced placement courses and/or International Baccalaureate. AVID seniors may receive University of California a-g elective credit upon completion of the AVID Seminar class. In addition, it restructures the teaching methods of an entire school to make college preparatory curricula accessible to almost all students.
