Shasta Trades Academy

Shasta Trades Academy (STA) is a new career and technical charter high school that will open its doors in August 2007 to about 50 students in grades 9 and 10. This countywide charter has garnered support from the Shasta Builders’ Exchange, Shasta-Trinity Regional Occupational Programs (ROP), Shasta College, The SMART Business Resource Center, and the Redding Chamber of Commerce.

Shasta Trades Academy will have two base sites. One is located at the Shasta Builders’ Exchange with a facilities use agreement for access to classroom space and use of the ‘site’ shop. The second site is located in a classroom facility owned by Shasta County Office of Education on the campus of Shasta College and will be used beginning in the 2008-2009 school year. This site allows students the opportunity to co-enroll in Shasta College cases appropriate for their educational/vocational goals.

In the 2008-09 school year, STA will begin to serve students in 11 th grade, and in 2009-10 will add a senior class and begin to fully serve students in grades 9 through 12.

Youth must be supported by teachers who are committed to developing strong relationships with their students, and who understand the social/emotional development of adolescents.

Meaningful Curriculum

We believe that curriculum is meaningful when students understand the tie-in between what they are learning and how it immediately impacts their lives.

Motivation and Competency

For students who are not considering college after high school, the world of work presents its own challenges. If we can give them the tools to successfully enter and remain in the workplace, it will increase their self-motivation, sense of competency, and knowledge.
