Coming Soon...the California School Dashboard!

This week, the California Department of Education will release a new website that shows how districts and schools are performing on the indicators included in California's new school accountability system. A public preview is expected to be available this week, with full implementation in the 2017-18 school year.

The new system will give a snapshot of several indicators that have been shown previously, along with a few new indicators to be released this fall.

  • Academic (Grades 3-8) for English Language Arts & Math
  • Chronic Absence {to be added in 2017-18}
  • College/Career {to be added in 2017-18}
  • English Learner Progress
  • Graduation Rate
  • Suspension Rate

These State Performance Levels will be shown color-coded with corresponding portions filled to ensure accessibility and use. The fully filled blue will identify the highest possible results.

 The State Performance Levels (colors) will combine the most currently available performance (Status) to past performance (Change). This method recognizes improvement as part of overall performance. The Dashboard provides four types of reports with detailed performance information:

  • Equity Report – performance level of all students (shown below)
  • Status and Change Report – current performance and change over time
  • Detailed Reports – year-by-year data for the state and local indicators
  • Student Group Report – performance of various student groups

 Key Messages

  • More than a single number: A quality education is defined by more than a single test score. The Dashboard includes a more comprehensive look into what is working within a school or district.
  • Equity: The Dashboard increases the focus on student groups and calls out any disparities that may exist.
  • Supports local decision-making. The Dashboard provides more information to support districts and schools as they strategically plan for the future.
Additional information, including a video that provides an overview is available on the California Department of Education website.
