SCOE Spam Filtering

According to Gartner Consulting, SPAM accounts for 60 to 75 percent of incoming e-mail messages. Once a nuisance, SPAM is now a major transmitter of malicious code and fraud. We have taken several measures to help stop the proliferation of SPAM and once again make e-mail a valuable and timely communication tool.

This guide will help you understand the mechanics of working with the Shastalink SPAM filter. Its operation is intuitive and very effective in removing your junk email. Once a day you will receive an email message in your inbox from “Shastalink SPAM Filter”. This message will summarize any e-mail messages that have been sent to you that have been identified as SPAM. After reviewing the summary you can either choose to deliver the quarantined messages to your Inbox or delete them as SPAM. Our SPAM firewall learns what you consider SPAM and will be become better at classifying e-mail messages as time passes.

If you are using another Anti-SPAM product you should consider disabling and/or removing it from your system. Some products, including SPAM Bayes, will not operate in conjunction with the Shastalink SPAM Filter.

The following is a step by step guide to working with your quarantined e-mail messages.

1. Daily you will receive a message from “Shastalink SPAM Filter”. (See Figure 1)

2. To view your entire quarantine inbox you can follow the link at the bottom of the message titled, “click here”. You can also choose to Deliver, Whitelist or Delete e-mail messages by clicking on them individually. (See Figure 2)

3. When you have finished working with your quarantined e-mail you can simply close the window.

We recommend that you not change your quarantine preferences. The default preferences will work very well for nearly all users. However advanced users may find a need to adjust them to meet their individual needs. The individual settings are listed below:

Security: You can change your quarantine inbox password. Although it is possible to login to the spam filter directly, we recommend that users follow the instructions listed in the daily quarantine summaries that are delivered.

Quarantine Enable/Disable: Choose this option to enable or disable quarantine of your e-mail messages. If you choose to disable the quarantine feature, all e-mail messages will be delivered directly to your inbox and those that are classified as SPAM will be marked with “[BULK]” in the subject line.

Spam Filter Enable/Disable: Choose this option to completely disable SPAM filtering for your account. This is not recommended.

Whitelist/Blacklist: Use this tool to prevent a specific e-mail sent from a specific sender from ever being classified as SPAM. Conversely, you can list e-mail messages from specific senders to always be considered SPAM.

Quarantine Notification: This allows you to change the frequency with which you receive quarantine summary messages.
