Visually Impaired - Orientation and Mobility

The purpose of the Visually Impaired Program is to enable children who are blind or partially sighted to remain in their home communities and comprehensive school sites to receive an education with their peers. The Visually Impaired program team includes teachers, a Braillist and an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Services are available for students and their families who reside within Shasta County.

Services Provided

The SCOE Visually Impaired Program provides:

Ongoing in-service and consultation for classroom teachers and support staff
Compensatory skill development, such as Braille reading, independent living skills, prevocational training, leaisure time and recreational skills
Referral to other agencies and organizations providing support for individuals with visual impairments
Orientation and Mobility services
- Development of relationship between student and environment
- Development of independent travel skills (bus, walking with cane)
