Longtime Shasta County educator Judy Flores has been appointed to fill the remainder of the term of Shasta County Superintendent of Schools Tom Armelino. Armelino announced in February he will be leaving June 30 to take on the job of Executive Director of the National Association of School Superintendents. Flores was appointed by the Shasta County Board of Education following interviews during an open special session of the board on Wednesday. She will be sworn in as the 26th Shasta County Superintendent of Schools July 1, 2017.

"I'm truly honored to be appointed to fulfill the role of Shasta County Superintendent of Schools until the next election in 2018, and I am thankful for this opportunity to serve," said Judy Flores. "Our mission at SCOE is one that I am passionate about, knowing that to be leaders in educational excellence, we, within SCOE, need to be leaders who are continuously learning and improving so that the support we offer to schools and our community will ensure Shasta County students receive a quality education preparing them for high school graduation and success in career and college."

"The Shasta County Board of Education interviewed two highly qualified candidates to fill the superintendency," said Shasta County Board of Education President Rhonda Hull. "We look forward to working with Judy Flores to continue the great work already in place and to ensure all students in Shasta County have access to a high quality public education."

During her ten years at the Shasta County Office of Education, she has brought in more than $10 million in grants for teacher training in a variety of subject areas that have impacted more than 450 teachers. She has been actively involved in supporting school districts, working with community partners, and advocating at the state level for the needs of small, rural districts.

Last week Flores was honored as Central Office Administrator of the Year in California by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). She has won numerous state and regional awards for her work.

Flores started her educational career as a teacher in the Hayward Unified School District. Judy, and her husband Dan, then moved to Shasta County where she became a teacher in the Enterprise Elementary School District in 1990.  Her husband is a music teacher at Boulder Creek School in the Enterprise Elementary School District.  Judy proceeded to earn her administrative credential and assumed various leadership roles and responsibilities in the Enterprise Elementary District Office between 1995-2007.  In 2007, Judy was hired to assume the position of Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services with the Shasta County Office of Education.

She earned a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies and a master's degree in Administration from Simpson University. Judy has three children (Natalie, Aimee, and Stephen) who were born and raised here in Shasta County. She has seen first-hand the impact of education and of trusting adult relationships with her own children and their friends.

Judy will begin working with current county superintendent, Tom Armelino on a transition plan to prepare her for assuming the role effective July 1, 2017.
