Student Programs

The Shasta County Office of Education operates three schools:
Excel Academy, Shasta County Independent Study, and Shasta County Tri Mountain Academy.
We are proud to provide a quality education for students with unique educational needs!

Excel Academy serves K-8 students who experience challenges in regulating their emotions and behaviors, and who may require additional supports beyond what their district schools can provide. These students are placed at Excel Academy through district referrals and must have an active Individualized Education Program (IEP). Our program is designed to meet the unique needs of each student, with the goal of equipping them with the skills necessary for a successful return to their district school.

Shasta County Independent Study (SCIS) is an alternative to conventional educational settings, allowing 6-12th grade students to complete coursework independently under the supervision of a credentialed teacher. Students meet individually with an assigned teacher a minimum of one time per week. SCIS is voluntary and provides the flexibility to meet students’ specific needs, interests, and learning styles. Our Independent Study teachers utilize State and district-adopted curriculum to ensure students meet or exceed California graduation requirements. Instruction is offered at two convenient locations in Redding. One at 3711 Oasis Road, and the other on the Shasta College campus.

Incarcerated youth receive education and support in the the Shasta County Tri Mountain Academy, run by SCOE. General education teachers, resource specialists, and para-educators ensure students’ IEP goals and services are met. Students have the opportunity to participate in Shasta-Trinity ROP courses and some dual enrollment college courses. All students have access to educational technology and online applications for credit advancement or recovery.

The Shasta County County Office of Education does not have the authority or resources to collect and/or store transcripts and other school records for all Shasta County public, private, and charter schools.

Per Shasta County Office of Education District Policy and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) student records are only available to those who have authorization from the student or parent, guardian or responsible person if the student is less than 18 years of age. If the student is 18 years of age or older, school records will not be released to a parent, guardian, or responsible person without the student’s written consent.

NOTE: To obtain a transcript from a California school, an individual must contact the school directly.  If the school has closed, we suggest contacting the local school district associated with that school for additional information.

District Homeless and Foster Youth Liaison

The role of the school district liaison for foster and homeless youth is crucial for ensuring these students receive necessary support and educational opportunities. These liaisons act as a bridge between schools, families, and social service agencies, working to remove barriers to education for these vulnerable student populations. Liaisons are vital in creating a supportive and equitable educational environment for foster and homeless students, helping them overcome the challenges they face and achieve their full potential.
