Student Programs
The Shasta County Office of Education operates three schools: Excel Academy, Shasta County Independent Study, and Juvenile Court School. We are proud to provide a quality education for students with unique educational needs!
Shasta County Independent Study (SCIS) is an alternative to conventional educational settings, allowing 6-12th grade students to complete coursework independently under the supervision of a credentialed teacher. Students meet individually with an assigned teacher a minimum of one time per week. SCIS is voluntary and provides the flexibility to meet students’ specific needs, interests, and learning styles. Our Independent Study teachers utilize State and district-adopted curriculum to ensure students meet or exceed California graduation requirements. Instruction is offered at two convenient locations in Redding. One at 3711 Oasis Road, and the other on the Shasta College campus.

This regional program provides a structured setting specifically designed to address the needs of students who require an intensive program to address emotional disabilities or serious behaviors that impede their learning. Students have the support of an onsite School Counselor, Mental Health Clinician, two behavior specialists: a School Psychologist and Behavior Consultant. The small site allows for supervision and safety while allowing the least restrictive environment. School assemblies provide for student recognition and parental involvement is encouraged. The program hosts two six-week sessions involving parents who want to connect with others about strategies to engage students in positive home and school interactions. Our program provides many opportunities for families to engage in their student's education. Parents are invited to attend field trips, award assemblies, the Thanksgiving Feast and to visit classrooms.
Excel Academy provides a safe and supportive environment where students develop effective academic and behavioral skills. Students are empowered to achieve their full potential through inter-agency partnerships and collaboration with families.
Incarcerated youth receive education and support in the the Shasta County Juvenile Court School, run by SCOE. General education teachers, resource specialists, and para-educators ensure students’ IEP goals and services are met. Students have the opportunity to participate in Shasta-Trinity ROP courses and some dual enrollment college courses. All students have access to educational technology and online applications for credit advancement or recovery.
The Shasta County County Office of Education does not have the authority or resources to collect and/or store transcripts and other school records for all Shasta County public, private, and charter schools.
Per Shasta County Office of Education District Policy and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) student records are only available to those who have authorization from the student or parent, guardian or responsible person if the student is less than 18 years of age. If the student is 18 years of age or older, school records will not be released to a parent, guardian, or responsible person without the student’s written consent.
NOTE: To obtain a transcript from a California school, an individual must contact the school directly. If the school has closed, we suggest contacting the local school district associated with that school for additional information.
